Currently, I am mining Monero and Ethereum using the same rigs. I have seen that as I move from Monero to Ethereum, the temperature rises from 12 to 15-degree centigrade. My rigs in the garage cause the temperature to reach up to 35-degree centigrade. Whereas, the temperature outside my home is -2 degrees. Proper ventilation is essential to keep the temperature constant.

Now, we will discuss how to build an 8 GPU mining rig in the best way to optimize your profit and lower your cost. First, I will explain what components you will need to build an 8 GPU mining rig.
Component to build an 8 GPU Mining Rig
I will include all the components to build an 8 GPU mining rig along with suggestions.
Note: It is important to mention that the prices may differ and keep changing on a timely basis. So, whatever prices mentioned in the article are not 100% guaranteed.
8 GPUs – The heart of the Rig
To build an 8 GPU mining rig, we will need 8 GPUs. There are two options available, either use eight GPUs of the same brand or use the combination of two or more. I prefer using the same brand as it is easy to adjust the temperature of the machine.
I chose an AMD RX Vega 56 card that cost me $400 each. You will need 8 of them so;
1 RX Vega 56 = $400
8 RX Vega 56 = 8 x $400 = $3200
It is expensive, isn’t it? But you have a choice to go for a lower rate card like AMD’s Radeon series RX 560, which will cost you around $200 each.
Let’s move on with the process of building our machine.
The next component you need is a motherboard.
ASUS PRIME Z270-A LGA1151 DR4
To build an 8 GPU mining rig, you will need a motherboard that has 8 PCI-E slot. Asus Prime Z7270-P is one of the best. The Asus motherboard has 7 PCI-E slots and 2 m.2 slots. We will attach 2 more PCI-E slots in one of the 7 slots. This way we will have 9 PCI-E slots. We will attach 8 GPUs in 8 of them and a storage device in the ninth one.
The specification of the Asus Prime Z7270-P motherboard are:
- It supports DDR4 RAM
- It supports Intel processor
- Price = Affordable (cheap compared to other options)
Now, you will need to buy 8 PCI-E RISERS in the next step.
PCI-E 16x to 1x RISERS
RISERS are very important to attach GPUs to the motherboard. You will need 8 of them since we have selected Asus Prime Z7270-P, so we will also need 2 m.2 PCI-E extenders. Attach the RISERS in the PCI-E slots and connect them with the 8 GPUs. Let’s move ahead, and in the next step, you will need RAM.
Ballistix Sport LT 4GB Single DDR4
I chose Ballistix 4GB DDR4 RAM. You can also select an 8GB RAM, but that will not make any difference in mining. So, I tried to be on the lower side and reduced my cost by choosing 4GB RAM.
Next, you need a CPU or Processor.
In connection with the Asus Prime motherboard, I choose Intel Celeron as my processor. It doesn’t matter to go for a high-end processor as we are performing GPU mining, not CPU mining. The need for a processor is only for booting up a mining rig and running the mining software. Choosing Intel Celeron has saved my cost.
SanDisk SSD PLUS 120GB
Your mining business depends on electricity and time. Time is money, and this statement stands in the case of mining. I choose SDD (Solid state drives) over HDD (Hard Disk Drive) for two reasons.
First, when you set up your mining rig for the first time, you will need to reboot your system a lot of times. If you are using the HDD, it won’t be delightful. HDD takes more time to reboot than SDD.
Second, SDD uses flash memory to deliver superb performance and durability. A hard drive device consists of lots of small moving parts like magnetic heads, spindles, and spinning platters. If things go wrong, you could lose all your important data. Unlike HDD, SDD without moving parts is more durable, runs cooler, and uses less energy.
Your mining rig without a power supply is useless. So, let’s move on to the next step.
EVGA 1000 GQ 80+ GOLD 1000W PSU
It is time to do some math.
One GPU card will consume 185 W of electricity.
8 GPUs will consume = 8 X 185 = 1480 W
The CPU, SSD, motherboard, and other components will consume around 250W. It means we need 1480 + 250 = 1730W of electricity supply. Instead of going for one PSU, I am going with two 1000W PSUs.
EVGA is one of the best power supply manufacturers in the market. I chose 2 PSUs of EVGA.
To connect the PSU, you will need an adapter cable. Let’s see which one I choose.
Thermaltake Dual 24-Pin Mining Adapter Cable
For 2 PSUs, we will need 1 Adapter cable. I choose Thermaltake Dual 24-Pin Adapter Cable because it is cheap. It will connect to both PSUs and then connect with the motherboard.
With so many components, you will need the right case to fit them all.

Building your own 8 GPU mining rig case might save your cost, but it is not easy. I picked Veddha Professional 8 GPU Miner Case. It is one of the best in the market with a proper cooling system to keep the GPUs temperature under control.

GPU is not profitable compared to ASIC and FPGA
First, let me explain ASIC and FPGA for those who do not know about these terms.
Application Specific Integrated Circuit is a device designed to fulfill a designated purpose. ASIC is the top choice when it comes to mining. They are much faster and cheaper compared to a mining rig. But, they are only designated to mine one type of cryptocurrency. You cannot mine Ethereum and Monero at the same time using an ASIC.
ASIC may cost you less when you buy it. But, the maintenance charges are very high compared to a GPU. First of all, it consumes a lot of electricity which results in huge electricity bills.
You need to rent a space to place your ASIC unit because it heats a lot and makes too much noise. Even your neighbors, three floors down, can hear it. It would help if you had proper cooling and ventilation service to reduce the heat ASIC produces.
The machine performs one purpose only. It has a poor resale value, which increases the overall cost and decreases profits compared to a mining rig.
FPGA stands for Field Programmable Gate Array. It is a reconfigurable integrated circuit programmed to work as per the intended design. An FPGA can perform functions like a microprocessor, an encryption unit, or a graphics card. It can also perform all these functions at the same time. The FPGAs are designed using hardware description languages such as Verilog and VHDL.
GPUs are good for compatibility. If an algorithm changes, the new software can run on older chips. But, FPGAs are more problematic to adapt to the change.

GTX 1070’s strong 1440p performance makes it attractive for both the gamers and miners.
